Mary Van Poole Scrapbook, 1908 – 1912

Mary Van Poole of Rowan County, North Carolina was a student at the State Normal and Industrial College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro), graduating in 1912 with a Bachelor of Science degree. The Mary Van Poole Scrapbook dates from 1908 to 1912. It has a brown cover embossed with a border and windmill image and is titled, Scrap Book. The Scrapbook contains brown paper and is annotated in black ink. It contains mounted photographs that feature the college, its buildings, and student life. The Collection also includes a photocopied duplicate of the scrapbook. Photographs depict many faculty and staff members, including Dr. Foust with Dr. Charles W. Elliot (President of Harvard), Dr. Anna Gove, Eliza N. Woolard (House Nurse), Miss Jamison, Miss Mary Owen Graham, Miss Coit, Mary Taylor Moore, Clara Booth Byrd, Miss Cora Strong, Miss Viola Boddie, Mr. Walter Jackson, Miss Winfield, Miss Gertie Mendenhall, Miss Annie Petty, Miss Bertha M. Lee, and Miss Mary Foust. Other photographs show campus views, including dormitory room interiors, Dr. F.W. Grudger’s botany lab, and Dr. Foust’s office. There are also photographs from field trips, including Dr. Gudger’s botany field trip (1910), an educational rally in downtown Greensboro (1909), a YWCA conference in Asheville (1911), Dr. Jackson’s field trip to the Guilford Battleground, and Dr. Gudger’s field trip to the mountains. Additional photographs of note include the class of 1910 basketball team, 1909 Field Day and Field Day Cup, and McIver’s grave on Founder’s Day in 1910.
